Training is offered to adult volunteers to help them educate themselves about being a leader. Leaders can attend specialty workshops such as first aid/CPR, What to do Instead of Screaming, Junior Girl Scout Awards and How to be an Effective Leader in Your Troop. Training options are on the way. Learn more.
Learning Opportunities on the Web is the vehicle to assist voluneers in enrolling in these workshops and many others. Volunteer trainers facilitate instructor-led workshops, or volunteers may take some of these courses at home through facilitated home study and online workshops. The online workshops include New Leader, Brownie Age-Level, Trip and Travel, Learning While Serving, Bridging All Levels, Cabin Camping, Money Management and Planning Events Beyond the Troop. When a volunteer enrolls in an online class a password is send after 24 hours giving the volunteer access to the course.
Volunteers can also serve Girl Scouts by becoming a council volunteer trainer. After being recommended to the program either by the trainer development specialist or being referred, volunteers are interviewed and given a broad overview of training. A one-day Train-the-Trainer workshop is offered for $40 and conducted at the Volunteer Service Center, Atlanta, three times a year. An instructor of trainers leads the workshop on how to be an effective trainer.
Trainers commit to conducting workshops for a minimum of 30 hours. They train in pairs, usually with an experienced or master trainer, to gain skills and knowledge while becoming comfortable in facilitating a class. Trainers attend meetings three times a year – in the fall to kick off fall classes, in the winter for a retreat for skill development and in the spring for evaluation of the current year and preparation for the upcoming fall.
The council also has a bilingual team of staff and volunteer Hispanic trainers to meet the needs of our growing Latino population. Their materials are in Spanish and delivered in Spanish.
To become a trainer, contact the trainer development specialist at (678) 420-2693 or mkottkamp@girlscoutsnwga.org.
You may register for workshops online using your password. Please visit How to Register. It is important to register by the deadline for all classes. If a class does not have a minimum number of participants registered by the deadline, it will be cancelled.
