How to Join Girl Scout Brownies are in grades two-three. The term “brownie” comes from a popular English tradition. A brownie is a good-natured elf that secretly helps at night with household chores. Read The Brownie Story adapted from a tale told at the beginning of Brownie Girl Scouting in 1926.

Girl Scout Brownies participate in Girl Scouting through Girl Scout Pathways, where girls have the freedom to choose from any of the six pathways and may participate in multiple pathways within a membership year. Different pathways will be geared specifically to different grade levels. Here, girls are given the opportunity to explore their skills and interests and are inspired to reach their personal best through a variety of fun and enriching leadership experiences. But more importantly, no matter where or how they participate, girls get the necessary guidance they need from adult volunteers and council staff to develop their leadership skills and understand how those skills can be used to make a difference in the world. A Girl Scout Brownie can also participate by being a Juliette following the Girl Scout Brownie program under the care of a parent or guardian. Girl Scout Brownies also learn through Girl Scout Journeys. The purpose of Journeys is to help girls grow into leaders, but it will also help them experience three keys to leadership which are at the heart of the Girl Scout philosophy of leadership: Discover, Connect and Take Action. Each grade level will have its own series of Journeys to engage the girl in exploring her surroundings. Girls and volunteers will be encouraged to add outings, celebrations, in-depth explorations or anything else that meets their interests, time and resources.

Journeys can be done in a variety of Girl Scout Pathways, including Juliette and short-term experiences.

Currently there are two Journey series entitled It's Your World - Change It! and It's Your Planet - Love It!

All Girl Scout Brownies make the Girl Scout Promise and live by the Girl Scout Law.
